Quiet, quaint and quintessentially English. The peaceful town of Tickhill is rich in history, having originally held an essential role in the Middle Ages after the establishment of Tickhill Castle as one of the gateways to South Yorkshire.
The name Tickhill is an Old English place-name, originally meaning”Hill where young goats are kept”. The town itself grew up around the castle built by Roger de Busli in the 11th century upon the hill. Nowadays, Tickhill Castle is leased by the Duchy of Lancaster to private tenants and only opened for 150 minutes one day per year to the general public. The rest of the time the castle is largely hidden from view with the Gatehouse hidden behind large wooden gates and the rest of the castle behind extensive foliage. However, the top of the motte can be seen from a public footpath near Lancaster Crescent.
Tickhill is a market town surrounded by open countryside; its high street offers many independent and unique speciality shops including two butchers, a fishmonger and a delicatessen as well as charming restaurants and several historic buildings including St Leonard’s Hospital.
Although Tickhill is one of the UK’s greener towns with many beautiful spots enjoy a walk, it also has excellent transportation links to the rest of the UK via Doncaster railway and Robin Hood airport.
